How to implement a highly transparent and controllable Excellence strategy?
BKW is the largest energy provider in Switzerland. As part of the corporation's strategy process, they defined Excellence as one of the most important strategic directions for the next 5 years. While initial strategic initiatives have been established, the business unit was struggling to implement a detailed Excellence concept to execute the corporate strategy in a highly transparent and controllable manner.
After a thorough review of the current status, we took a closer look at three specific areas for improvement and development to implement a sustainable Excellence Concept.
First, we looked at the design of the internal strategy process. The analysis showed a disconnection between the strategic targets and the operationalization within the different business units. Second, the organization lacked a comprehensive KPI-Framework to achieve transparency and controllability. Lastly, the process management was laid out in a very technical manner without the proper consideration of customer centricity.
These insights allowed us to design an integrated Excellence Framework that increased transparency as well as controllability for the management board.
The final framework entailed a new governance structure for the strategy execution, process management as well as the project management office. The new organisation is more central and ensures the strategic alignment of the critical entities for Excellence within the organisation. Additionally, the board approved a comprehensive KPI-Framework including the associated dashboard, that allows the board to gain strategic control and transparency to execute the new corporate strategy. Finally, we provided the Excellence team with the necessary materials and knowledge to anchor and spread the new framework and mindset throughout the organisation.
